Norway wants to introduce DNS blocking to ban offshore gambling platforms from offering their services to local customers. Lawmakers have discussed the measure for more than a decade. Thus, the pipe dream could turn into reality soon.

The minister of culture, Anette Trettebergstuen, supports the proposed measure. Also, she hopes to ban offshore betting sites from 2024. Previous ministers of culture rejected the proposal. However, Trettebergstuen believes it can make it difficult for offshore companies to reach local players.

Norsk Tipping, Norway's gambling website, is supposed to be protected by blocking the DNS of offshore gambling sites. It has the monopoly of the market in the country. Also, lawmakers will introduce the new measure this fall. Once approved, it will be implemented on January 1, 2024.

DNS Blocking for Offshore Operators

The new regulations provide that the Norwegian Gambling Authority oversees enforcing the prohibition. In addition, the authority can request that ISPs in Norway restrict access to gambling-related websites and businesses, such as BetOnline.ag sportsbook.

According to gambling and baseball news reports, the move contradicts predictions that Norway will follow the licensing models of Sweden and Denmark. Currently, only The Progress Party (FRP) favors this plan.

Silje Hjemdal, a member of the FRP, commented on the situation, voicing her doubts regarding the DNS blockage. She and other detractors of the plan say it may not work as planned. Furthermore, some argue that prohibiting access to such sites amounts to censorship that violates users' privacy rights.

The Conservative Party will probably oppose this idea because it shares the party's stance on licensing. This law appears to be quite like one suggested by conservatives in 2021. However, the party now argues that blocking would be ineffective since it is easy to avoid. In addition, bookie pay per head features are better than the state-run betting platform.
