NJ sports betting industry gets a new competitor after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the budget bill. It includes a provision that makes mobile sports betting legal in the Big Apple. NY Senator Joe Addabbo said that mobile sportsbooks would be available in time for the Super Bowl.

According to sports betting software solutions experts, Super Bowl LVI will be on February 13, 2022. Many people expect New York to become one of the biggest sports wagering markets in the US. 

In the past, Governor Cuomo opposed sports betting. It ended when he looked for additional sources of income to solve the state’s budget deficit. The governor initially wanted a single online sportsbook operator. However, he compromised, and the law allows two licensees. 

NJ Sports Betting Competitor

According to bookie pay per head reviews, 80 percent of US sports betting occurred through smartphones or computers. Also, NY lawmakers were tired of watching residents cross the border to wager on sports. They said that the money should stay in New York and not go to New Jersey and its casinos. 

In January, New Jersey earned $83 million in revenue. On the other hand, New York got $3 million. According to bookie pay per head sources, 25 percent of NJ sports betting action came from New Yorkers. 

New Jersey earned more because it allowed mobile betting. Thus, NY lawmakers want to stop the flow of money by legalizing mobile betting. In 2019, experts estimated that 90 percent of US sports betting action would be done through mobile devices in the next five to ten years. 

In 2021, 81 percent of sports wagers are made online. Also, 85 percent of the bets made in the first two months of the years were through the internet. In New Jersey, 92 percent of players used the internet to wager on sports.
